Type Locality and Naming

Along the village of Karnap, W. Uzbekistan. O.S. Vyalov, S.I. Ilyin, G.Ya. Meyer et al., 1947 (158, p.21). Karaiz; on the adjacent plains, it is exposed in wells. Stratotype not specified.

Synonym: Karnap Suite, Карнапская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Divided into three sub-suites.

Upper - red, gray, pink sandstones, siltstone (aleurolites), clays, shell rocks. Thickness 26-40m.

Middle - greenish-gray clays, siltstone (aleurolites), sandstones. Thickness 30-90m.

Lower - greenish-gray, red sandstones, gravelites, clays, siltstone (aleurolites). Thickness 50-70m.


Lithology Pattern: 
Fine-grained sandstone


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Karnap Fm lies with an erosional contact on the Sukaytin Fm

Upper contact

It is overlain with an erosional contact by the Tym Fm.

Regional extent

Zirabulak-Ziaetdin mountains, Karaiz.

Fossils

Upper - Contains marine bivalve mollusks - Megatrigonia syrdariensis (Arkh.), M. pseudoindica (Arkh.), Exogyra cf. decussata Goldf.

Middle - Contains marine bivalve mollusks - Inoceramus ex gr.apicalis Woods, Liostrea rouvillei Coq., Megatrigonia turkestanensis Arkh.; foraminifers Ammomarginulina sixtelae Arap., A. aulatensis Arap., Reophax ulussensis Suleim., Gaudryinella pseudoasiatica N. Byk.

Lower - Contains foraminifers - Gaudryinella pseudoasiatica N. Byk.


Age 

Upper - Assigned to the Santonian. Middle - Belongs to the Coniacian. Lower - Conditionally belongs to the upper Turonian. The formation is considered to range from Upper Turonian to Santonian; according to Strelelev (446) – Turonian (313; 445).
